A key activity managed by the Community Development Department is Code Enforcement. Code Enforcement encourages voluntary Municipal Code compliance by providing residents, business operators, property owners, and tenants the opportunity, with sufficient notice and information, to comply with the Hawaiian Gardens Municipal Code and other applicable laws and requirements.
Code enforcement identifies property improvements needed to protect public safety and enhance property values. Code Enforcement staff strives to provide fair, sensitive, and timely responses to the concerns of residents and businesses in their duties to enforce the Municipal Code. Code Enforcement officers follow a code of ethics, are state certified, and wear uniforms and badges when performing field inspections.
The Code Enforcement Division covers the following activities:
- Enforcing the City’s Municipal Code
- Issuing warning notices
- Issuing administrative citations
- Assist property owners in abatement
- Provide notices of substandard conditions
- Work with the City Attorney’s office in prosecution
