Mayor Luis Roa was born in Venustiano Carranza, Michoacán, (Hawaiian Gardens’ Sister City). He first came to Hawaiian Gardens in the mid 80’s as a toddler and has been a resident of the city ever since. He has one sibling, his sister Joanna whom he loves so dearly. He attended all of the local schools: Furgeson Elementary, Fedde Middle School and Artesia High School. He then went on to Compton Community College, Long Beach City College where he earned an Associate of Arts Degree, Cal State Dominguez where he earned a Bachelors of Public Administration Degree and finally, Cal State Long Beach where he earned his Masters of Public Administration.
During his academic years, he was a student athlete. He joined the Hawaiian Garden Eagles when he was 10 years old. The HG Eagles is an organization that he respects and embraces due to his many years as a participant. Later, he became a volunteer coach for the HG Eagles. They are also the organization that he credits along with his family for instilling good values and a deep sense of community.
He is a former employee of the City of Hawaiian Gardens. He served as a recreation leader for almost 15 years. Most of his work experience is in education and municipal government. He has served in multiple capacities within the school district as well. He’s held the title of Paraprofessional educator, Youth Employment grant staff, Substitute Teacher, Benefits Specialist, as well as Payroll Technician.
Luis is passionate about helping others and hopes that in his role as a council member he can continue to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Hawaiian Gardens. His objective is to make Hawaiian Gardens a safe and innovative city. He also desires to continue community revitalization through capital improvement projects.
