The city contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department for law enforcement services. There are dedicated deputies and Special Assignment Officers who protect the City and in case of an emergency can access services from over 18,000 sheriff department personnel.
The City has recently reorganized and reopened the Public Safety Center whose staff will concentrate on homelessness issues, traffic, parking, code-enforcement, and helping the Sheriff Department in an administrative capacity. Not only will Public Safety Officers free sheriff deputies to concentrate on fighting criminal activities, but they can also assist with non-emergent issues that arise in the City.
On October 25, 2022 the City Council approved the immediate expenditure of over three quarters of a million dollars this fiscal year in public safety measures to include the following:
-Modified schedule for SAO (Special Assignment Officer) deputy to work evenings
-Scheduled two additional Sheriff Units every evening until further notice
-Requested a Sheriff Decoy vehicle to ward off criminal activity
-Work with LASD to confirm they are registered with Ring security camera service
-Upgrade citywide surveillance cameras
-research facial recognition software
-reassessment of citywide street lighting to make sure there is adequate lighting.
-Addition of a 40 hour no-relief sergeant dedicated to serving Hawaiian Gardens
-An increase of $80,000 to sheriff overtime budget
-Addition of one full time and two part-time public safety officers
-Acquisition of Shot Spotter Respond System to investigate shooting incidents
-Contracting with City of Lakewood for Sky Night Helicopter services to assist Sheriff department in Hawaiian Gardens.
-The City will participate in LASD mental evaluation team
-$10,000 will be available for Residence and Business Ring Camera reimbursement program
