Miss Hawaiian Gardens Scholarship

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year the City of Hawaiian Gardens awards scholarships to qualifying high school graduating seniors who reside in the City. In addition, the top three scholarship recipient’s names are placed on a plaque located on the Mayor’s Walk of Achievement on Carson Street.

The scholarship program has been developed in two phases. The first phase consists of a community service project. It is our goal that the potential recipients experience the satisfaction of assisting their community and its residents. Students must register By December 15, 2017 with the City of Hawaiian Gardens Human Service Department to perform at least 20 hours of Community Service. Examples of duties may include: assisting staff in leading organized recreational activities in an After School Program, Youth Sports, Winter Camp, Game Room, Clarkdale Park or Lee Ware Park.

The requisite Volunteer hours must be completed by January 12, 2018 in order to be eligible to turn in the Scholarship Application Form.

Requirements:

  • Resident of Hawaiian Gardens
  • Graduating Senior
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5
  • Must indicate the scholarship category applying for
  • Volunteer Application must be submitted by December 15, 2017 by 5 p.m.
  • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service with the City of Hawaiian Gardens by deadline
  • Attend one day orientation on January 12, 2018
  • Submit application by deadline of February 16, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Attend in-person interview
  • Interview dates are not negotiable and candidates must dress in professional attire.

Guidelines:

  • Funds will be applied to Financial Aid Office at college of enrollment (funds cannot be used for personal use)
  • Funds will be distributed per semester for units in one institution upon proof of enrollment
  • Scholarship will expire two years from award date
  • Students may only apply for one city sponsor scholarship

  • Letters of Reference/Recommendation
  • High School Transcript
  • Essay

All applications will be considered. The top applicants will be invited to attend an interview session as part of the screening and selection process.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

ADULT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The program will award scholarships to low income residents who are interested in pursuing higher education.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Hawaiian Gardens Resident
  • Must provide proof “low income” status (according to the CDBG standards)
  • Application must be submitted by deadline of February 16, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.
  • Must volunteer at one special event (TBD)
  • Must dress appropriate and professional for interview
  • Interviews are face to face
  • Interviews dates and time are not negotiable
  • May only apply a maximum of 6 years.

Guidelines

  • Funds will be applied to Financial Aid Office at college/school of enrollment (funds cannot be used for personal expenses)
  • Funds will be distributed per semester for units in one institution upon proof of enrollment
  • Scholarship will expire two years from award date
  • Students enrolled in masters program are not guaranteed to receive a scholarship
  • Students may only apply for one city sponsor scholarship

  • Proof of income (2017 income taxes only)
  • 500 word essay
  • Proof of address

ADULT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

MISS HAWAIIAN GARDENS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Miss Hawaiian Gardens Contest is not a pageant
This is a professional development opportunity for young women.
We are looking for professional, outgoing, responsible, articulate,
young women to represent the City of Hawaiian Gardens for one year.
Contestants will be judged on their poise, attitude, social skills, and
professionalism.

All contestant forms due by January 12, 2018 by 5:00pm.

Contest Qualifications:

  • Must be a college student
  • 18-25 years of age
  • Live in Hawaiian Gardens
  • Never been married/ no children
  • Serve as an ambassador
  • Attend citywide special events
  • Scholarships will be awarded after end of term
  • Dcholarship will be sent to the financial aid office at college of enrollment
  • Scholarships will expire two years from award date
  • Previous Miss Hawaiian Gardens may not apply for a second term
  • Princess and other contestants may apply one more time (maximum of two times only)

Interested in the Miss Hawaiian Gardens Contest, must complete the form and attend the
Contest Orientation on January 26, 2018 at 6:00p.m. at:

The crowing of Miss Hawaiian Gardens will be on Saturday June 9, 2018 at C. Robert Lee Activity Center.
